What Is Cupping?
Cupping therapy might be trendy now, but it’s not new. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which specialized cups are placed on the skin for varying periods of time utilizing heat and different degrees of suction to increase blood flow to specific target areas. Through active manipulation of the cups, cupping acts as a type of specialized heat activated deep-tissue massage. Cupping can help with pain, inflammation, lymphatic drainage, easing adhesions, as well as promoting relaxation and a general feeling of tension release.
Our clinic is unique in that we offer different specialized cupping techniques to suit your personalized needs which include Fire Cupping, Flash Cupping and Kinetic Cupping.
What Conditions Can Cupping Treat?
How Does Cupping Work?
What Should I Expect During A Cupping Treatment?
During a cupping treatment, one or more specialized glass cups are placed on the skin and then heated or suctioned onto the skin. The cup is heated with fire that is placed directly into the cup. The fire source is then removed, and the heated cup is placed with the open side directly on your skin.
When the hot cup is placed on your skin, the air inside the cup cools and creates a vacuum that draws the skin and muscle upward into the cup. Your skin may turn red as the blood vessels respond to the change in pressure. The localized redness and color change is a positive visual sign that indicates increased active blood flow the targeted areas where the cups are placed. In fact, the color of the cupping response allows us to diagnosis a patient’s internal condition.
Any mild bruising or other marks usually go away within 10 days of the session. Cupping is usually performed along with acupuncture treatments.
